Sheridan 3×3 Set Build

Screen Shot 2013-10-28 at 8.13.34 PMgarage plan w_carsgarage sketch P1110105Every year my Production Design students at Sheridan College build a studio set and then shoot 8-10 different short films on the same set. This yera we built the interior of a gas station.

These are some shots of the work in progress.

We painted a backing as well for outside the entrance.

Below a photo shop mock up of the backing.

As it turned out, we were unable to get our REAL gas pumps and we had them printed on vinyl and mounted on foam core.

They actually worked quite well in the background.

Below a link to a  short Youtube video.

Set Building Basics

We were shooting on location here in toronto at the Waverly Hotel at Spadina and College. It was decided to shoot at the actual location for 2 days and then to move the crew back to the studio where we would build a section of the set.

6650086465_c7baeb2812_oThe first step was to get some detailed photos and measurements. The Key Scenic painter and Construction Manager met me at the location and we did our research getting measurements and matching colours.

P1100723 P1100727 P1100741 P1100745The next step is to come up with a floor plan that works

and situate it within the studio. Crew access and fire regulations are taken into account.

Plan 2.

The set went up very quickly.

All in all, a very believable set that matched the location.

Sheridan College ATVF Production Design 2011/2012

For school this year I decided to recycle some of the pieces that were built in the summer for the Empire State Building set seen in an earlier post.

In addition I had a large New York Tanslight left over that we put to use as well.. The end result was quite good and this year’s PD students really worked hard on the set.

As I write this, 10 different films are being shot on the same set.

Some screen captures from a short film we made. The film can be seen here.

Empire State Building/Observation Deck/Set Build

Kelly and Josh hard at work.

A selection of photos of a set that we build for Hallmark’s Mistletoe Over Manhattan Christmas movie. A small portion of the Empire State Building’s observation deck. We took some liberties with the design but in the end it was quite successful. Photos by Adam Kubiw. Set Construction by Mike Edmund, Mike Nesbit, Paul Sibley, Josh Heisie, Adam Kubiw and Kelsey Tremblay.

Dark Matters-Virtual Set Design

The illustration and mood board for Frankenstein’s Lab.

The rendered set.

Dark Matters- Virtual Set Process

First step is a copy of the green screen screen capture.

The screen capture is converted to black and white and once the perspective is figured out I just drawn the set onto the page.

The illustration is then given to the animators, along with a scale floor plan and they start to “build” the set in the computer.

The rendered set.

Dark Matters- Virtual Sets

A sample board for the GCI animators for the Science Channel’s new series Dark Matters.

This would be coupled with a floor plan as well.

Santa’s Workshop- The Case For Christmas

A set we build for the Hallmark TV movie, The Case for Christmas. Built by my former Sheridan ATVF students,

Josh Heisie, Mike Edmund, Adam Kuwbi,  Mike Nesbit, Patrick Gautier and Maria Sominelli.

Allison Hickey, a current student helped as well.

Aaron Stone Season 2/ Scottish Tomb

A working drawing for an ancient Scottish Sarcophagus. This was given to the carpenters along with some reference and they made a fantastic prop.

Aaron Stone Season 2/ Mr. Galalagos Lair

A couple of sketches for Mr. Galapagos’ Lair, an old abandoned mine and a sealed hotel room.
