Sheridan 3×3 Set Build
Every year my Production Design students at Sheridan College build a studio set and then shoot 8-10 different short films on the same set. This yera we built the interior of a gas station.
These are some shots of the work in progress.
We painted a backing as well for outside the entrance.
Below a photo shop mock up of the backing.
As it turned out, we were unable to get our REAL gas pumps and we had them printed on vinyl and mounted on foam core.
They actually worked quite well in the background.
Below a link to a short Youtube video.
Set Building Basics
We were shooting on location here in toronto at the Waverly Hotel at Spadina and College. It was decided to shoot at the actual location for 2 days and then to move the crew back to the studio where we would build a section of the set.
The first step was to get some detailed photos and measurements. The Key Scenic painter and Construction Manager met me at the location and we did our research getting measurements and matching colours.
The next step is to come up with a floor plan that works
and situate it within the studio. Crew access and fire regulations are taken into account.
Plan 1 below.
This was shown to the Director who had some notes.
Plan 2.
Below is the final plan (within reason as things can still change.)
A simple elevation followed with door details.
The set went up very quickly.
Once the set was standing the painters got to it.
The painters were then followed by the Set Decorators.
All in all, a very believable set that matched the location.
New Art Moderne Set Proposal
A quick rendering for approval before we move on to the working drawings.
Teen Magazine
This was created by Mike Nesbitt for the TV Movie An Officer and a Murderer….
Crime Scene
These are staged prop photos for a television series. Cassie Keenan is the model.
Victorian Desk Build
We needed a nice Victorian desk for a set and the carpenters built this and the skilled scenic painters finished it.
Thanks to Phil Carvalho, Mark Taylor and Rob Taylor.
Saul Bass Style Posters
Some prop posters for a film rendered in the style of legendary designer, Saul Bass.
Sheridan College ATVF Production Design 2011/2012
For school this year I decided to recycle some of the pieces that were built in the summer for the Empire State Building set seen in an earlier post.
In addition I had a large New York Tanslight left over that we put to use as well.. The end result was quite good and this year’s PD students really worked hard on the set.
As I write this, 10 different films are being shot on the same set.
Some screen captures from a short film we made. The film can be seen here.
